Discussion Board 8 - Voter ID Laws - Are They Necessary

Q A topic related to voting in elections that is currently under debate involves the idea of Voter ID Laws. For example, here in Texas, voters must present a government-issued form of photo identification (including drivers licenses, state identification cards, and passports) in order to vote. There are some Americans who feel such laws are necessary in order to reduce voter fraud. However, opponents to these laws believe that photo identification requirements disenfranchise minorities, as well as prevents those who are unable to obtain such identification, for whatever reason, from voting. There are also some Americans who feel such a requirement constitutes a form of a poll tax, seeing that a voter must spend money in order to obtain the identification needed in order to vote (Poll taxes were made illegal by the 24th Amendment to the United States Constitution). With this information in mind, the question to be answered for your initial post is as follows: Voter ID Laws - Are They Necessary? Why or Why Not? There is no "right or wrong" answer here; however, it is imperative that you substantiate your commentary. For this assignment, you are to make three posts. Your first, initial post is to be posted by 11:59 pm on Wednesday of this week, and is to be a minimum of 200 words. You are then to make, at minimum, two follow-up posts, responding to the initial posts of two other students of your choice. Each one of these follow-up posts are to be, at minimum, 75 words each, and are to be posted by 11:59 pm on Sunday of this week. A simple "I agree" post or "Good post" post is not sufficient. While it is completely acceptable to agree (or disagree) with another student, it is important to substantiate your position. Remember, you will never be "graded" on your opinions in this course. However, you will be assessed on your effort and if you meet the minimum requirements for these posts. Have fun with these posts! They are designed to simulate discussion as students would have in an actual, physical classroom environment. Please remember to use proper "netiquette" and be considerate and courteous to one another. Abusive language or insults will not be tolerated.

I think that Voter ID Laws are necessary in order to ensure that there are no traces of any individual entering the polling areas with the intention of harming others. Acts of terrorism can be controlled if there is the presence of such laws. This is because the photo identification as well as the mark of authentication can be checked to confirm whether the proof of photo identification of an individual is valid or not. The government has to understand that the minorities are required to be informed about making their Voter ID Cards or having some kind of photo ID proof authenticated by the hallmark of the government.
